Measuring Space Part 1-4

The Measuring Space series is the result of the dance workshops with Matan David and Sita Ostheimer at Nuova Officina Della Danza (NOD) in Turin and the Wave Dance Residency at Rimbun Dahan in Kuala Lumpur. I presented all four videos at the Art Space H27 Shanghai during my solo exhibition in November 2018.

  • Project Start: October 2018
  • Project Role: Video Artist

From Sketches to 3D Animation

I learned different choreographies and dance philosophies during the dance workshops in Turin. Having trouble to keep up with the pace of the classes, being the only non-professional dancer, I decided to record the movement patterns. Using my knowledge of 3D modeling and rendering, I later translated my notes into a 3D animation.

Back to Physical Space

After attending the NOD workshops in Turin, I continued my research at the Wave Dance Residency in Malaysia, learning Rafael Alvarez' Movement strategies. As a succession of the first video, I wanted to bring body movements from the virtual space back to the physical space and filmed the movement strategies learned in the dance residence at the beach and put my video editing skills to use.

Free of Gravity

Continuing my research, I worked together with a diving center to film the same choreography free of gravity and learning about the properties of seawater color, e.g., orange or red watercolor signifies industrial pollution through the accumulation of metals.

Virtual in Physical Space

Learning from the movement experience underwater, I changed various aspects in the movement sequences and stage design and collaborated with the SLATE dance company, filming the fourth installment of the series.
